Copper wire solenoid
Dating1868 - 1874 (?)
This object is quite frequent in electrodynamics and it has the name of solenoid, word introduced in 1820 by tha French physicist André-Marie Ampére (1775-1836). Generally the copper wire, which must be isolated with silk if the coils are compact, is wrapped on an insulating wooden support. When a direct current circulates in it, the solenoid has a magnetic behaviour completely equivalent to the one shown by a magnetized iron bar of the same length and for this reason the solenoids have several applications in a lot of electrodynamic experiments.
