Airy's pendulum
DatingMay 1915
The so-called perpendicular simultaneous pendular movements (the composition of two perpendicular sinusoidal movements) was first investigated in 1815 by the astronomer Nethaniel Bowditch (1773-1838) and then studied in 1857 by the physicist Jean Antoine Lissajous (1822-1880), of whom homonymous figures (obtained by changing the oscillation periods' ratio) are well-known. The tool, invented by George Biddell Airy (1801-1892), is a double pendulum with which is possible to produce with the sand the Lissajous' figures in a real simple way. These same figures can be obtained in acoustics using some special diapasons with mirrors and a luminous source (this is known as Lissajous' experience).
