This pressure gauge, called metallic in contrast with the gauge type with mercury and type bellows, has its name due to the fact that the French engineer-Manufacturer of watches Eugéne Bourdon (1808-1884) patented it in 1849. The instrument use to work the variations in the radius of curvature of a metal pipe (with elliptical section and bent as a circular arc) connected with the pressure variations of the fluid inside the pipe. A system of levers amplifies the shift of the free end of the pipe and (sometime with a gear) an index moves above a scale. This device measure both negative and positive pressures (the zero is the value of tha average atmospheric pressure at the see level).
