Calipers for measuring the diameter of balls
DatingBefore 1818 (1677)
MakerGiacomo Lusverg (1636-1689)
A very simple but quite important tool used in ballistics to measure the diameter of a cannon ball and to verify its compatibility with the piece of artillery. If in fact the dimensional tolerance of the cannon ball is insufficient, the thermal expansion can embed the bullet with the risk of explosion of the gun. On the contrary, if the ball is too small, the cannon throw is weak.
