Electric thermometer by Riess
Dating1861 - 1862
This device was invented in 1837-1838 by P. T. Riess (1805-1885) to show and to measure the heat effects of the electric sparks and those also associated with the passage of the electric current in a wire (Joule effect). The heat produced is transferred to the air closed into the glassy flask. The air in expanding itself moves down the coloured liquid within the glass tube. The heat ammount produced depends on the characteristics of the wire inside the flask (material, section) and it can be proved that it is proportional to the square of the quantity of electricity that flows through the conductor. In reality not all the energy is transformed into heat and for this reason the experimental errors are high.
